Mastering BIDMAS: Order of Operations
Mastering BIDMAS: Order of Operations
What do you already know about BIDMAS?
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson you will confidently use BIDMAS to solve mathematical expressions in the correct order.
What is BIDMAS?
BIDMAS is a guide to the order of operations: Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.
Why Use an Order of Operations?
Without BIDMAS
Everyone gets the same answer for the same calculation by following the sequence.
Calculations may give different answers if no rules are followed.
With BIDMAS
BIDMAS Breakdown
B - Brackets first I - Indices next DM - Division and Multiplication from left to right AS - Addition and Subtraction from left to right
Worked Example
Solve: 6 + 2 (3 7f 1d 2) Step 1: Solve inside brackets first (3 + 2 = 5). Step 2: 6 + 2 × 5 Step 3: Division/Multiplication next (2 × 5 = 10). Step 4: 6 + 10 = 16.
Practice Time
Work through the attached worksheet, using BIDMAS for each question.
Reflection: Why Is BIDMAS Useful?
