Je gebruikt ontkennende vragen om:

Don't you like rap music? (bevestiging)
Can't you just be quiet? (ergernis)
Haven't you eaten this before? (ongeloof)

Hoe maak je een ontkennende vraag met 'to be' ?

Wanneer er een vorm van to be (am, are, is, was of were) in de zin staat dan zet je deze vooraan in de zin gevolgd door NOT:

  • He is very kind. - Isn't he very kind?
  • They are playing outside. - Aren't they playing outside?

Hoe maak je een ontkennende vraag met een hulpwerkwoord?
Als er meer dan 1 werkwoord in de zin staat dan is het eerste werkwoord het hulpwerkwoord. Je zet deze dan 
vooraan in de zin gevolgd door NOT:

  • He can help you. - Can't he help you?
  • They will call you . Won't they call you?
  • He should see a doctor. Shouldn't he see a doctor?

Als er has of have got in de zin staat dan zet je has of have vooraan in de zin gevolgd door NOT:

  • Mariah has got a brother. - Hasn't she got a brother?
  • My parents have got a new car. - Haven't my parents got a new car?

                Don't/doesn't/didn't + onderwerp + hele werkwoord

  • They play games every day. Don't they play games every day?
  • He likes chocolate. Doesn't he like chocolate?
  • My mother trusted her. Didn't my mother trust her?
