Reading strategies

- Orientation
- Skim the text
- Read the questions
- Decide where in the text you can find the answer: scan the text.

Slide 31 - Slide

Orientation
You always start with this
  • Your goal at the start is to get a first impression.
  • Lay-out: chat, newspaper article, menu? etc.
  • First impression: title, sub-headings, pictures
  • Expectations: what's it about? What do you already know about this topic?

Slide 32 - Slide

Skimming
  • Read the first and last sentence of every paragraph.
  • Just try to find out what the text is about, skip the details.
  • Don't worry about difficult or unknown words.
  • Look at paragraphs in bold.
  • Use skimming for questions about the whole text. Look for clues to support the right answer.

Slide 33 - Slide

Scanning
  • Looking for certain information.
  • For example in which year something happened or the price of something.
  • You don't have to read the rest of the text if you find the answer.
Let's practice!

Slide 34 - Slide

Reading intently
Reading the text attentively line by line, looking for the answer to the question.

Make sure you UNDERSTAND the question! Use a dictionary to understand every word.
