Discovering Decimals!

What do you already know about decimals?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will understand what decimals are, how to read and write them, and where we use them in real life.

What is a Decimal?

A decimal is a way of showing numbers that are less than one using a dot called a decimal point.

Spot the Decimal Point!

In 3.5, the dot between the 3 and 5 is the decimal point.

Decimals and Fractions

Decimals are another way of writing fractions. For example: 0.5 = 1/2

Read This Decimal

How do we read 0.2? We say 'zero point two'.

Decimals in Real Life

We use decimals in money. £1.50 is one pound and fifty pence.

Why Learn Decimals?

Decimals help us count and measure things that are not whole, like prices, lengths, or weights.

What are Tenths?

Tenths are when something is split into ten equal parts. One tenth is 0.1.

What are Hundredths?

Hundredths are when something is split into 100 equal parts. One hundredth is 0.01.

Measuring with Decimals

We use decimals on rulers to measure shorter lengths like 5.6 cm.

Can Decimals Be More Than One?

Yes! 2.5 is two and a half. It is more than 1, but not quite 3.

Writing a Decimal

Always put the decimal point in the right place. 0.8 is NOT the same as 8.0!

Place Value and Decimals

Each digit after the decimal point has its own place value, like tenths and hundredths.

Decimal Place Values

First digit after decimal (0.3 = 3 tenths)

Second digit after decimal (0.25 = 2 tenths and 5 hundredths)

Fun Fact: Decimals Everywhere!

Decimals are used in sports scores, shopping, and even in recipes.
