Definition and Formation of Volcanoes
Volcanoes are ruptures in the crust. They allow magma, ash, and gases to escape. Commonly occur at tectonic plate boundaries.
Tectonic Plates and Volcanic Activity
Tectonic plates are large sections of Earth's lithosphere. Divergent and convergent boundaries lead to volcanic activity. Submarine volcanoes form underwater.
Types of Volcanoes
Shield volcanoes: Broad and gently sloping. Stratovolcanoes: Tall and conical with layers. Cinder cones: Small and steep formed by pyroclastic fragments.
Hotspots
