At the end of this lesson you should be able to...

  • Know what the 4 fundamental British Values are

  • Have an understanding of what each of the British Values means

  • Consider how these values apply to your life as a student at Stanmore College

What do you think the fundamental British Values might be?

The 4 fundamental British Values set out by the Department for Education are:

  • Democracy

  • The Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.

What does democracy mean?

A

a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives

B

a system of government by one person with absolute power

C

government or the holding of power by people selected according to merit

D

cruel and oppressive government or rule

Democracy is…

a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives

We choose our leaders with elections. Every citizen over the age of 18 (soon to be 16!) has the right to vote.

Where can we see democracy at Stanmore College?

What is the Rule of Law?

A

a state of disorder due to a disregard of the law

B

the process of re-educating those who have committed a crime and preparing them to re-enter society

C

the idea that those who are in charge of the country can break the law if they think it's for the best

D

the restriction of the arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws

The Rule of Law is…

the restriction of the arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws.

This means everyone has to follow the same laws - including powerful figures like the Prime Minister and the Head of State (the King/Queen)

What are some of the rules that everyone has to follow at Stanmore College, including staff?

Individual Liberty is...

the right to believe, act and express oneself freely

This means that people are allowed to wear, say and believe whatever they want to, so long as it doesn't conflict with other British Values such as the Rule of Law.

What does Individual Liberty mean?

A

the right to exercise control over other people

B

the right to believe, act and express oneself freely

C

the right to do whatever you want, whenever you want

D

the right to say what you like, even if others disagree

What individual liberties do you have here at Stanmore College?

What does Mutual Respect mean?

Mutual respect means…

to treat people politely and thoughtfully, to show we value them.

It is a fundamental British Value to have mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.

How can we show respect to each other at Stanmore College?
