SOME & ANY

Betekenis: een paar, een beetje, wat, enkele

Maar wanneer gebruik je some en wanneer gebruik je any?

SOME • when to use it? 

1. In bevestigende / positieve zinnen

   We bought some flowers

2. In een vraag als je verwacht dat het 

   antwoord "ja" is

   Can I have some water please?

3. Bij een aanbod of verzoek

   Would you like some tea?

   

    

 

ANY • when to use it?

1. In ontkennende / negatieve zinnen

2. In vraagzinnen - waarvan het antwoord 

     nog niet zeker is

We didn't buy any flowers.

They arrived without any delay.

Bij vraagzinnen: hoe maak je duidelijk aan de leerlingen om welke zinnen het gaat. Aangezien vraagzinnen ook some kunnen bevatten. 

ANY • when to use it?

1. In ontkennende / negatieve zinnen

2. In vraagzinnen - waarvan het antwoord 

     nog niet zeker is

     Do you have any luggage?

             

We didn't buy any flowers.

They arrived without any delay.

Bij vraagzinnen: hoe maak je duidelijk aan de leerlingen om welke zinnen het gaat. Aangezien vraagzinnen ook some kunnen bevatten. 

SOME

ANY 

Gebruik je bij: 

- Bevestigende zinnen;

- Vragen waarbij je verwacht dat het antwoord "ja" is;

- Als het een aanbod of verzoek is.

Gebruik je bij: 

- Ontkennende / Negatieve zinnen;

- Alle andere vraagzinnen.

Let op woorden zoals,

without, hardly, never

Strong form any 

We use any to mean ‘it does not matter which or what’, to describe something which is not limited. We use this meaning of any with all types of nouns and usually in affirmative sentences.

In speaking we often stress any:

Call 0800675-437 for any information about the courses. (+ uncountable noun)

When you make a late booking, you don’t know where you’re going to go, do you? It could be any destination. (+ singular countable noun)

Any as a pronoun

Any can be used as a pronoun (without a noun following) when the noun is understood.

A:Have you got some £1 coins on you?

B:Sorry, I don’t think I have any. (understood: I don’t think I have any £1 coins.)

Any of

We use any of to refer to a part of a whole:

Are any of you going to the meeting?

I couldn’t answer any of these questions.

I listen to Abba but I’ve never bought any of their music.

Strong form some

The strong form of some is stressed. This form contrasts with others or all or enough

Why do some people live longer than other people? (some, not others)

Some boys went to the front of the stage to get a better view. The rest of us couldn’t see a thing. (some, not all)

We can use this strong form to refer to someone or something particular but unknown, especially with singular countable nouns

There must be some way of opening this printer!

Some idiot driver crashed into the back of me.

Some with numbers

We use the strong form of some with numbers. It can suggest an unexpectedly high amount:

Some £30 billion was needed to rebuild the hospital.

Some 60% of the course is devoted to design.

Some as a pronoun

We use some as a pronoun (i.e. without a noun following) when the noun is understood:

If you need any money, I’ll lend you some.

French mustards are usually flavoured with spices. Some have added sugar. Some are quite salty.

I am going to buy ... flowers.

COMBINING SOME & ANY

Some and any kunnen ook in andere vormen voorkomen:

• Somebody -- anybody
• Something -- anything
• Someone -- anyone
• Somewhere -- anywhere 
• Somehow - anyhow

Hierbij wordt de betekenis: iemand, ergens of iets 

en de regels blijven hetzelfde :)
