Examples of Fungi

Slide 5 - Mind map

Characteristics of Fungi
Fungi can be unicellular or multicellular

All fungi cells have:
  • Vacuole
  • Nucleus
  • Cell wall
multi = more than 1
cellular = cells
The organism consists out of more than one cell

Slide 6 - Slide

Unicellular fungi
  • Reproduction by Cell division
  • Example: yeast

Slide 7 - Slide

Multicellular fungi
  • Usually have a mycelium
  • Reproduction by spores
         - Toadstools
         - at the end of hyphae
  • Examples
Toadstools/mushrooms are an organ of fungi.
Toadstools have gills or tubes
Inside/between these parts spores are made.
Spores allow fungi to reproduce.
The mycelium is the main part of a fungus. It can be very big!
It is a collection of many threads: hyphae
It is usually underground, but can also be found inside (dead) organisms.
Spores are very small 'seeds'.
A new mycelium start growing from a spore
Pictured: Fly agaric (amanita muscaria)

Slide 8 - Slide

Useful & harmful
  • Feed on dead bodies of other organisms
  • Make penicillin (an antibiotic       )
  • Help make food : bread, beer, cheese, etc.
  • Cause fungal infections
  • Spoil food
Substance that kills bacteria
