1) Read text around gap carefully

2) Decide on word type: verb/noun/preposition - part of fixed expression /adjective/adverb/linking word (conjunction) etc.

3) Decide on the approximate meaning of the word/phrase 

4) Fill in the word and check if meaning fits the gap by rereading the text

Past Simple
Form: 
  • regular: verb + ED
  • irregular: 2nd column
  • Question/negative: Did + verb; Didn't + verb (verb = hele ww)

Use: 
To talk about things in the past, finished actions. 
When = mentioned 



Signal words:
When, then, ago, last, in 2019, this morning etc.

Example:
We went to the movies last weekend.
She didn't join us then.
Present Perfect
Form:
  • regular: has / have + verb + ED  (has = he/she/it)
  • irregular: has / have + 3rd column
  • Quest./neg.: has/have + verb+ED/3rd form; hasn't/haven;t + verb+ED/3rd form

Use:
  • To talk about things that started in the past & are still going on
  • To talk about sth. that has just finished (result important; when not mentioned)
  • To talk about result (when not mentioned) or experience

Signal words:
so far, yet, already, never, ever, always, up till now, since, just

Example:
I have just done the dishes! Have you cleaned up the rest yet?
