Mastering the Magic of Exponent Laws

Learning objective

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, you will understand and apply the laws of exponents to simplify expressions.

What do you already know about the rules for handling exponents?

What are Exponents?

Exponents represent repeated multiplication of a number by itself. Example: 3^4 means 3 multiplied by itself 4 times.

Product of Powers Law

When multiplying with the same base, add exponents: a^m * a^n = a^(m+n).

Quotient of Powers Law

When dividing with the same base, subtract exponents: a^m / a^n = a^(m-n).

Power of a Power Law

When raising a power to another power, multiply exponents: (a^m)^n = a^(m*n).

Power of a Product Law

Distribute the exponent to each factor inside the parentheses: (ab)^n = a^n * b^n.

Zero and Negative Exponents

a^0 = 1 and a^(-n) = 1/a^n. Negative exponents indicate reciprocals.

Interactive Practice

Solve: Simplify (x^3 * x^4) / x^2 and (2ab^2)^3.

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
