George lies to avoid further questions; a familial bond does not need to be explained much further.

• The dog is a pet, just as the mice, Lennie might hurt him.

• The dog is too old to live a good life, he might be better off dead.

• The dog is no longer of any use for the ranch; a new puppy could replace him.

• The dog is disliked, except by Candy.

• The friendship between Candy and his dog could mirror the friendship between George and Lennie. One is dependent on the other.

• Lennie is compared to animals, which puts him on a similar level as the dog
