Present simple

• Habits: I play football every Thursday.
• Permanent situation: I live in Brussels.
• Facts and general truths: Water freezes at 0° and boils at 100°C. 

Present continuous

• Focus now: I speak Dutch but I'm speaking English right now.
• Temporary/changing situation: I'm working late this week.
• Action in progress: I’m reading a good book at the moment.
• Irritating repeating action: I’m always being turned down for jobs I can do! 

Present perfect simple

• A present situation that makes you look back: It has been ages since I last saw her.
• Something that started in the past/earlier, up till now with focus on result: My sister has baked a pie.
• Signal words: For, Since, Yet, Already, Up to now 
  

Past simple

• Completed actions in the past or habbits: I saw it yesterday.
• Short past actions that follow one another (e.g. a story): The movie received such bad reviews that it closed within a week after opening.
• Usually with clear time indication in the past (e.g. yesterday)

Past continuous

• Actions going on in the past (focus on duration): Were they dancing at last night’s party?
• Actions going on in the past, interrupted by a short past action: Daniel was reading when his mother came in.
• Past actions happening at the same time.

Past perfect

• To talk about time up to a certain point in the past: She had published her first poem by the time she was eight.
• The earlier of two past actions: When the police arrived, the thief had escaped.
• After certain adverbs
