So, what is place value?
  • Place value tells us how much each digit in a number is worth.
  • Digits on the left have a larger value than digits to the right.
Example:

This is a 2 in the TENS PLACE which is the same as 20
This is a 4 in the ONES PLACE which is the same as 4

What are units and rods?
  • A unit represents a value of one. There is one unit pictured below so the value is 1 

  • A rod represents a value of ten. Ten units make a rod. There is one rod pictured so the value is 10.
