How to Respond to a disclosure of abuse
Listen and do not interrupt the child/adult
Praise the child/adult "thank you for telling me" or "you have done the right thing telling"
After the child/adult has finished, ask if there is anything else they wish to tell you
You cannot keep this a 'secret' or 'confidential' if it meets the threshold for abuse
Explain you will need to inform the safeguarding officer and ask for their consent
Be age/capacity appropriate
Keep the child/adult and parent/carer informed of the process and who you are sharing the information with and why
Role play - in pairs
Scenario A: A young person confides that they are afraid to go home because of how they are treated by a family member.
Scenario B: An elderly resident in a care home mentions that their medication is often missed.
Scenario C: A person with a disability says they feel isolated and unsupported by their caregiver.

DAVE IS 43 AND LIVES WITH HIS MOTHER.
HE WAS BORN WITH CEREBAL PALSY THAT CAUSES COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT. HE IS UNABLE TO WORK BUT IS OFTEN OUT IN TOWN. DAVE IS VERY SOCIABLE.
HE TOLD HIS CARE WORKER, CARLA, THAT HIS UNCLE TOUCHES HIM INAPPROPRIATELY “DOWN THERE”
CARLA REPORTS THIS AS PER POLICY AND PROCEDURE, INCLUDING A WRITTEN ACCOUNT.
