Idolenleer van Francis Bacon

• In boek I van The New Organon introduceert Bacon het begrip idol.

• Idolen zijn karakteristieke fouten en verkeerde neigingen van ons denken (het menselijk kenvermogen) die ons op

dwaalwegen brengen.

• Idolen zijn een soort spookbeelden die ons in de ban houden.

• Moderne wetenschappers spreken van biases.

Waarom een idolenleer?

The formation of ideas and axioms by true induction is no

doubt the proper remedy to be applied for the keeping off

and clearing away of idols. To point them out, however, is of

great use; for the doctrine of Idols is to the interpretation of

nature what the doctrine of the refutation of sophisms is to

common logic.

Welke idolen kun je in deze uitspraak ontwaren?

• Tribe: simplificatie van een complex fenomeen tot iets makkelijk begrijpbaars -> is typisch menselijke neiging
• Cave: na persoonlijke ervaring met ADHD en medicatie kun je tot deze conclusie komen -> gevolg van individuele misvattingen
• Market place: wat betekent het woord 'ziekte' hier en hoe beïnvloedt dat hoe mensen over ADHD denken? -> geen helderheid over taal en communicatie
• Theatre: blind vertrouwen op een medisch model of fysisch wereldbeeld -> filosofische dogma's of drogbeelden
