to-infinitive or verb+ing?
In het Engels bestaan er bepaalde werkwoordcombinaties. Er is geen regel voor. Je moet ze uit je hoofd leren. 
In deze les gaan we met sommige combinaties oefenen.

Je maakt de verschillende combinaties met to en het hele werkwoord of met werkwoord+ing

*need                                * want

We gebruiken verb+ing na deze werkwoorden:
* avoid                 * can't stand
* can't help        * dislike
*feel like              * don't mind
* keep                   * enjoy
* miss                    * hate
* suggest             * like
* stop                     *love
I don't mind doing my homework.
He keeps calling me.

There aren't any rules for verb patterns. You'll have to rely on your own language skills or learn them by heart and practice a lot!
