Main idea?
The main idea is the most important idea or thought in a text, audio clip or video. 

It is what the speaker wants to make clear to the listener. It usually becomes clear at the beginning of the clip.

Pay attention to words like so, therefore or like I said before. These words are at the beginning of a sentence in which the main idea is given.

The writer of a text has a certain goal. He or she might want to explain something to the reader, or the writer might want the reader to do something. 


Different texts can have different purposes.
