Interviews/ casting
  • Casting is a big part of the production. 
  • You need to make a character profile (class, background, gait, age etc).
  • Use Media Therapy (@Facebook) for casting calls & see current practice.
  • Pick Key scenes that explore the characters behaviour and mental state.

Running Auditions
  • Select 'Sides' Carefully & let them prepare.
  • 'Cold readings' are unfair
  • Ask yourself: 
  • Is the Actor right for the part? 
  • The actor's attention to simple reality? 
  • Can you work with the actor?

Anticipation is a key factor in simple reality. 
First Read Through
  • A Great Ice breaker
  • Actors and team can see characters in the flesh
  • Iron out questions (lines, meaning, relationships etc)
  • Be open to questions & don't shoot ideas down
  • You might realise that some things need tweaked

Directing During Rehearsals 
  • Give them the time that they need within the constraints of the rehearsal period. 
  • Talk about circumstances and wants: This helps an actor understand the actions that are akin to the ones you have imagined. 
  • Be honest with them about what works or does not. 
  • Create a good atmosphere for taking risks.
  • Ask yourself- Do you believe them? 
  • Speak to the character not the actor.
