Adding Like a Pro: One & Two Digit Numbers

What do you already know about adding small numbers?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will know strategies to add 1- and 2-digit numbers confidently by practising 'I do, We do, You do' steps.

What Is Addition?

Addition means finding the total number when you put groups together. Let’s see how it works with small numbers.

I Do: Adding Single Digits

Watch as I add 3 + 5 using counters. 3 counters, add 5 more, total is 8!

We Do: Adding Together

Example 1

Example 2

Try 8 + 2 together. What’s our answer? How did we solve it?

Let’s add 4 + 7. What strategies can we use? (Count on or use fingers.)

You Do: Practice Time

Now it’s your turn! Solve: 6 + 5 and 9 + 4. Try drawing or using cubes if you need help.

Adding Two-Digit Numbers

We can use place value. For example, 23 + 15: Add tens (20 + 10), then add ones (3 + 5). Total is 38.

Let's Practise Together!

Try 47 + 21 by yourself. Show your strategy to your partner.

We Do

You Do

Add 34 + 12 as a class. What steps do we use? (Tens then ones.)
