At the end of this lesson, you will know the difference between adjectives and adverbs and are able to use them in productive language skills.

The words you just wrote down, are called adjectives. They give an attribute to a noun (things, people, animals).

Adjectives

Adjectives give an attribute to a noun (or pronoun).

Adjectives may come before the word they modify:

That is a cute puppy.

He has black hair.

But adjectives can also follow the word they modify:

That puppy is cute.

His hair is black.

Now that you know what adjectives are, take a look at the underlined words in the following sentences.

You know adjectives give an extra attribute to a noun. But how about the underlined words in the sentences? What words do they give an attribute to?

Look at the differences between adverbs and adjectives.

The words giving an attribute to the verb get ‘ly’ at the end, while the adjectives don’t.

These words are called adverbs. They modify a verb, adjective or even another adverb!

• She sat down quietly.
• The movie was surprisingly entertaining, capturing the audience's attention from start to finish.
• He ran extremely quickly to catch the last train of the night.
