Our Families and Relationships

What do you already know about families and relationships?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to recognise different types of families, understand how family members help each other, and know how to be a good friend.

What Makes a Family?

A family can look many different ways. Families are people who care for each other.

Who is in a Family?

Families can include mums, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents, carers, and even pets!

Different Family Types

Some children have two mums or two dads, some live with grandparents or carers. Every family is special.

What Do Families Do?

Families support us, keep us safe, and help us learn. They love and care for us.

How Do Families Help Each Other?

Family members help with homework, chores, and take care of each other if someone is unwell.

Family Shows Love

We can show love by hugging, helping, listening, or spending time together.

Talking and Listening

Listen

Talk

Family members listen to each other. It helps solve problems.

Talking kindly is important. Ask questions and share how you feel.

Families Celebrate Together

Families celebrate birthdays, special days, and achievements. Celebrating together makes memories.

Family Traditions

Some families have special meals, games, or holidays they enjoy together.

What Is a Relationship?

A relationship is the way people are connected. We have relationships with family and friends.

Who Are Your Friends?

Friends are people who make us feel happy, play with us, and look after us at school and at home.

How to Be a Good Friend

Share, help, and listen to friends. Use kind words.

Be Kind

Take turns and make sure everyone feels included.

Be Fair

Solving Problems

If you have a problem with a friend, try to talk about it and listen. Ask an adult for help if needed.

Respecting Differences

Everyone is different and that is a good thing. We respect family and friends from all backgrounds.

What Makes Us Unique?

We look, speak, and live differently. Appreciate everyone’s uniqueness.

Trusting Adults

Safe adults help us when we have problems or feel sad. Talk to a trusted grown-up if you need help.

Family or Friendship Problems

It is normal to have arguments. Saying sorry and forgiving helps keep relationships strong.

Let's Reflect

Think about your family. What do you like best about being part of your family?
