New Netherlands
- Tensions arose between the colonists: The Dutch, England and France. They all came to seek their fortunes. 
- also tensions between the colonists and the Native Americans

Colonists
- They went to America to escape the poverty in Europe
- They expected to find easy riches in the North, but they were disappointed 
- In the south they started to successfully plant tobacco. 
- A lot of different religions had fled to America
- The more people, the more trade, so other religions were allowed. 
- But there were still not enough people, so they would send prisoners

Native Americans 
- The Europeans pushed to indigenous population farther and farther from their native territories. 
- They did not have any private land ownership. 
- They had no immunity to the European diseases. 
- Also wars between Native tribes about trade with the Europeans.

African Americans 
- The plantations had a shortage of labour
- So they went to Africa...
- They started as indentured workers but in 1660: the Black Laws --> slavery is official. 
- indentured workers: A person became an indentured servant by borrowing money and then voluntarily agreeing to work off the debt during a specified term (debt slave).
