  1. zelfstandig naamwoord
  2. of is naamwoordelijk deel van het gezegde na koppelwerkwoord (be, become, appear, get, seem, sound, taste, feel, smell, look)

  • An awful song.
  • The song was awful. (na koppelwerkwoord 'be')
  • That looked awful. (na koppelwerkwoord 'look')

  1. een werkwoord
  2. een bijvoeglijk naamwoord

ADVERB kunnen worden afgeleid van ADJECTIVES door de uitgang -ly aan het betreffende ADJECTIVE toe te voegen.
  • He wrote a beautiful book (adjective, over zn 'book')
  • He wrote beautifully (adverb, over ww 'write')
  • Her skin is smooth (adjective, na koppelww 'to be')
  • The car drove smoothly (adverb, over ww 'drive')

  • Her complexion looked natural (adj, na koppelww 'look')

  • He is a real bully (adjective, over zn 'bully')
  • He is a really sweet guy (adverb, over 'sweet')

Uitzonderingen
  • Adjective GOOD wordt WELL (It's a good car. It drives well)
  • Andere adverbs houden dezelfde vorm als adjectives  (A fast car. It drives fast)
  • Zie lijst p.21: adverbs die zowel met als zonder -ly voorkomen. Verschil in gebruik/betekenis. Uit je hoofd!
