Max: Hi Charmaine, please go ahead and ask your question.
Charmaine: Thank you. I (have) ordered a set of headphones through your website, but I’ve just received an email saying they are out of stock.
Max: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.
Charmaine: Yes, it’s a shame. But more importantly, I had already paid for them. Can I get a refund?
Max: Of course! Let me sort that out for you right away. Could you give me the order number, please?
Charmaine: Yes, I have it here. It’s 2-6-0-0-4-7-8-0.
Max: Thanks, Charmaine. OK, this will take a day or two to process, and then the money will be returned to your credit card balance.
Charmaine: OK, that sounds good.
Max: Is there anything else I can do for you, Charmaine?
Charmaine: No, thank you. That is all.
Max: Great, thank you for calling! Bye!

Phone call
You are at Victoria Railway station in Manchester, where you intended to catch the last bus, but it has already left. You decide to call a taxi to take you to your B&B (67 Bradford Road, Manchester). You call the taxi office and ask the employee to send a taxi. The employee repeats the address details, makes a note of your mobile phone number and confirms that a taxi will arrive as soon as possible.

Practise the phone call with a classmate. When you're satisfied, make a recording OR write a script for the phone call. Hand it in via Teams.

Slide 16 - Slide

Work with a fellow student and have the following telephone conversations. Each choose one of the options and think up the details (names, addresses, phone numbers, times, etc.) yourself.

  1. You call a friend to ask if they want to go out to a certain pub tonight. Your friend's brother answers the phone.
  2. You call the hospital to reschedule an appointment. The receptionist at the main desk takes your call.
  3. You call a taxi company and ask if they can take you to a certain address at a certain time. A telephone operator takes your call.
