Introducing Operation Jeedara
In the Great Australian Bight a number of companies have leases to undertake exploration and drill for oil.  The Bight has some of the roughest seas and is not the place to be drilling for oil.

Sea Shepherd and its campaign partners took the Steve Irwin to the Great Australian Bight in 2016 to show the world what was at risk.

Rich in biodiversity and beauty the Bight is home to one of the planet’s most significant Southern Right whale nurseries and to some of the world’s rarest sea life. Critically endangered Southern Blue Fin tuna, the Great White Shark, seals, dolphins, penguins, rare sea eagles, and 27 whale species all call this pristine place home. Operation Jeedara showcased to the world just how fragile the Great Australian Bight is and asked it to be left alone from Big Oil.

Protecting the Bight
Following the 2016 trip to the Bight and media attention, both BP and Chevron pulled out of plans to drill for oil in the Bight.

In 2018 the fight continued with companies Equinor and Santos, proceeding with plans to drill for oil.  A second trip to the Bight was undertaken, this time the cameras went below the waves to reveal more secrets from this natural wonderland. Exploring and gathering vital evidence to prove just how important Marine Park Sanctuaries are to the Bight.

Oil spill modelling
This image shows the potential impact and reach of an oil spill in the Great Australian Bight in winter. The modelling was completed by Bight alliance partner, the Wilderness Society.

BP’s own spill modelling showed a great reach for the oil spill and more extensive damage.
