The four revolutions of the computer 
From nomads till 21st century
  1. When permanent settlements arose, so did trade routes: the first continuous flow of long contact --> new professions were needed.
  2. since 1460, when people like Columbus started sailing to other parts of the world, more of the world reached us. New things like potatoes came into our world. 
  3. Technology like the internal combustion engine made faster communication between different parts of the world possible: sailing and flying.
  4. After the developments of the Second World War, a new development accelerated --> the computer and the Internet.

The origin
Computer used to be a name for someone who makes calculations. The Latin 'computare' therefore means 'to calculate'. This could, for example, be useful for
ship navigation.

Babbage 1791 - 1871
Charles Babbage tried to build a machine that could perform calculations automatically. It could work by inserting punched cards. You can still see punch cards on barrel organs. In this way, he had a machine that received an input, calculated things, and gave an output.

Ada Lovelace 1815 - 1852
Ada Lovelace heard about Charles Babbage's ideas and the analytical machine around 1834. She later came into contact with Babbage and helped him design this machine.
 What she made was a plan that is now seen as the first computer programme: the machine did things by itself.

Alan Turing (1912 - 1954)
He became famous because he had cracked the enigma code in the Second World War with a gigantic computer. His model paved the way for the 'smarter' computer.

This company made it possible to have a computer at home on your desk. It was still very expensive and difficult to operate because you had to code. Not everyone could do this.

The mouse
Due to the mouse, it became possible to control a desktop.  This meant that ordinary people did not have to use codes later on to control the computer. You could just click on programmes.

Steve Jobs: iPhone
'You always have a mouse with you: your finger,' said Apple founder Steve Jobs.
 With the iPod music player, Steve Jobs made Apple hip again. A few years later, the biggest success since the PC came out: the smartphone. This is the smallest computer ever made.

The bar at the bottom of your desktop is called the taskbar. This is always the bar where the time and date are. If you press the flag (this button is called start) the start menu opens.

This is also where you shut down the computer. You always have to shut down the computer when using media wisdom.
