  • A big group of refugees, the geuzen, fight
    back! 
  • William of Orange is their leader.
  • In 1568 they attack and the Dutch Revolt
    starts (the Eighty years' war.)

  • Albas armies are too strong for the Geuzen
  • However, in 1572 The watergeuzen capture Den Briel.
  • Because of this more and more cities dare to side with the rebels.
  • 1572 --> Mutiny causes the Spanish Fury
  • 1576 --> Pacification of Ghent
  • Each province can determine which religion
    it's people practice.

The Dutch Revolt
  • The northern provinces continue the battle in 1579.
  • They stop recognizing Philip II as their ruler in 1581.
    --> The Act of Abjuration.
  • In 1584 William of Orange is murdered by Balthasar
    Gerards.
  • Then in 1588 the seven most northern provinces|
    decide to move forward as a republic as the
    Dutch Republic.
