The East Indies: history 
  • The VOC traded with the East Indies since the 17th century
  • In 1799, the VOC went bankrupt 
  • The Dutch government took the assets of the VOC and they establish   The Dutch East Indies. 
  • The local people are subjected to a lot of violence.

  • To govern the DEI, an governor-general was appointed. 
  • He used a divide and rule tactic: a method of government where   you put groups against each other to prevent them from cooperating,   with the aim of making it easier for yourself to govern.

One of the most imporant things for the Netherlands was making sure they were also making money from the colony. 
This lead to exploitation: to exploit the local people van de lokale and resources. 

Example: het cultivation system
Indonesian farmers had to use 20% of their ground for Dutch trade.

The cultivation system did not work out at all.  
  • It caused famines
  • It didn't make a lot of money

Effect: free labour 
Indonesian farmers now started working for Dutch entrepreneurs 
(=liberalism!)
