Modals: must, have to, should, ought to
  • Should('nt) = when you think something has to (not) happen in a certain way -> Lenn should eat less sweets
  • Must (not)/ Mustn't = when you think something has to (not) happen. Must > should -> You must not talk during his speech. (Meer vanuit de spreker)
  • Has/have to = sureness, necessity or obligation (jij of iemand anders) -> This answer has to be correct. (sureness)
    The soup has to be stirred to prevent burning. (necessity)
    They have to wear a school uniform. (obligation)

Modals: must, have to, should, ought to
  • Don't/doesn't have to = no obligation/necessity (niet per se). -> You don't have to wear a tie with your suit.
  • Ought to = zou moeten.  To give advice, say that something should be done/ask about own obligations. Super formal questions. -> Ought I to write him an apalogy
  • Difference should and ought? Should is more subjective (own opinion), ought to is more objective (law/duty/regulation)
