What is PRIDE about?

LO: To examine what Pride month is about, why it is celebrated and the reasons why it should matter to everyone.

What is your opinion on Pride month?

Pride Month is not just important for the LGBTQ+ community.

While it is still a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, a commemoration of its history and struggles, and a movement for continued equality and acceptance - it also raises awareness of discrimination, provides a sense of community and belonging, and advocates for human rights and legal changes. 

It is a time where people who used to be marginalised, imprisoned and punished now get to celebrate the rights allowed to them because we live in a progressive society.

By celebrating the community, they also honour the memory of the struggles of people that came before them.

So from a new perspective...

Are there any issues around Pride month?

Religion

Some people oppose Pride Month due to religious or cultural beliefs, which may view LGBTQ+ identities as contrary to their values.

Fake support?

Others have concerns about commercialisation, arguing that corporate "rainbow capitalism" is a shallow and self-serving attempt at marketing rather than genuine support for the community.

Anti-straight?

Additionally, some within the LGBTQ+ community have issues with Pride's focus, feeling that it 'targets' cisgender gay men, making them an 'enemy' while neglecting the struggles of other marginalised groups, such as transgender and bisexual people, as well as LGBTQ+ people of colour. 

it is important to remember that these are issues highlighted by the LGBTQ+ community themselves - and generally arise from a very small amount of people..

Why do you think some people might have an issue with Pride month?

You don't have to celebrate Pride month, but you also shouldn't berate anyone for doing so.

We all have things that we like to celebrate, and often we don't hold celebrating against anyone - think about football, gaming or liking some other type of music.

It's OK if you didn't win, or it's not your favourite - but it should be OK if it is for someone else.
