Introductie

This lesson is designed to introduce your students to the concept of study skills for revision and continued practice. The students will learn a few simple examples of ways that they can advance their own understanding of how to learn, revise and promote their own development in their learning. This lesson is not designed to be a comprehensive list of all the various study skills documented, but more of a roundup of some of the most well document (often misused) and easiest ways they can start having an impact on their own metacognitive abilities. Mastering metacognitive revision strategies bridges the gap between passive memorisation and deep, lasting retention. This interactive resource guides students through evidence-based study habits, effective note-taking frameworks, reframing mistakes as feedback, and maximizing group collaboration. REDEFINING "MISTAKES".

Making a mistake, or not knowing something is not a sign of weakness, inability or 'being thick'.

It's an opportunity to improve your understanding, bridge gaps in your learning and discover something new.

A simple way to start redefining this in your head, is to start practicing 

active learning - really, this comes down to challenging yourself to be open to getting feedback on 'mistakes' or areas you can work on. To start, work on getting better at the following;

  1. Be confident in demonstrating what you do know in class.

  2. Participate in relevant discussions around a topic, even if you're aware that you're not the expert...

  3. Practice by doing. This is the one most obvious, but most overlooked.

  4. Once you think you have understood something, teach it to someone which will make you feel more confident - and will show you any areas you might need to work on through being questioned by your student on that topic.

Framing errors as crucial cognitive feedback points helps shift students away from performative perfectionism and towards diagnostic study habits.


Stretch: Challenge learners to analyse a recent incorrect answer from a test and pinpoint whether the error stemmed from a gap in knowledge or a flaw in examination technique.


Device-Free: Ask students to turn to a partner and share one mistake they made this week that actually helped them understand a concept better.

NOTE-TAKING: YOUR WAY.

There are many different ways to put your learning into a format that works for you. The most popular, and also most effective is through flashcards or quiz cards. If you already have a process that works for you, such as mind-mapping, linking or using practice papers, they are also great!

Breaking down various structural frameworks encourages students to transition from mindless transcription to adopting a personalised note-taking system that actively engages their working memory.


Stretch: Challenge learners to compare linear outlining with the Cornell method, justifying which approach is more effective for reviewing material prior to a high-stakes exam.


Device-Free: Ask students to pair up and physically review a recent page from their exercise books, identifying one specific formatting trick they could borrow from their partner to improve clarity.

ASK MORE QUESTIONS.

This is an easy one to remember, and one you can start doing immediately. Simply put, It's scientifically proven to help your learning.


As already mentioned in the active learning example, asking questions helps your brain engage with a subject. This doesn't always have to be about something you didn't understand, or need help with. Asking questions to further your understanding is just as effective, especially when you are in a room with at least one expert!

Encouraging students to interrogate core concepts through active questioning prevents passive skimming and prompts deeper semantic processing during independent review

Stretch: Challenge learners to transform a passive summary statement from a recent unit into three distinct 'why' or 'how' questions that probe underlying causes.

It's highly likely you use one form of social media or another.


It's also highly unlikely you will use it less based on a slide I can create about study techniques.


So, why not use it to your brains benefit?

There are thousands of people on whatever app you use that will have advice on grades, studying and revision for people in your position, and within that group, loads that will have advice and inspiration on the particular topics and exam boards you are using.


Rather than getting lost doom-scrolling, why not follow some people that can actively help you improve your understanding, and curve your habit into something slightly more positive?

GROUPWORK.

Working in a group can be a great way to keep focus, check common misconceptions and provide you with a network of people who can help explain concepts or topics to you in a new way

But it only works structure. Try these 3 rules...

  •  80/20 split between focussed work, using a revision or learning technique and having breaks, catch-ups or getting lost in tiktok..

  • Find a constructive way to record what you covered, and how well you all did in the session. This means you can start next session with a quick refresher - why not make a quiz of your own? 

  •  Try to have a mix of strengths and weaknesses in different areas or topics for your groups - there isn't much point if you can't give and receive advice!

Framing collaborative revision as an active retrieval tool helps students leverage peer explanation to expose personal knowledge gaps and deepen long-term retention.


Stretch: Challenge students to evaluate when collaborative study is more effective than solo revision, justifying how to structure a peer session to avoid passive distraction.


Device-Free: Have students turn to a partner and take turns explaining a complex concept using simple language, giving immediate feedback on any missing steps.

LEARN FROM OTHERS.

Sometimes, the best ways to learn new ways of learning, 

is to see how your peers manage it. 


This doesn't mean you'll learn the same way as your best friend, 

or even someone else you know from the same class. 


What it does mean, is that there are hundreds more ways you could be 

improving your understanding on a subject.
