Year 7 – Introduction to Computer Hardware

Lesson objectives 

Conquer: Understand that a computer is made up of a range of components.

Aspire: List a range of components that are found in a computer and explain their function.

Hardware components guide 

• You are going to create a guide of all the hardware components we use inside of a computer.

• This guide will contain information about what each part does along with images for reader to look at.
  

 

The CPU

• CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.

• The CPU is known as the brain because it is used to process data and instructions

                                      

•                                         This is a CPU, its very small and takes up very little space inside the PC.

 

Hardware components guide 

• Create a PowerPoint titled “Hardware components” or open the one you made last week. 

• Slide 1 - The CPU:  Find an image of the CPU and add it.
•  State what CPU is short for and what it does.
  

• Extension: Find an image of a body part we can use to represent the CPU.

If students finish the 2 tasks and the extension, ask them to design their hardware guide, or a cover slide to introduce it., 

The Motherboard

• The motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer.

• All components (parts) of the computer are connected to the motherboard, even the CPU. 

• The motherboard acts like the skeleton because it connects everything.

• Extension: Find an image of a body part we can use to represent the Motherboard.

This week: What is the purpose of the CPU?

The Hard Drive 

• The hard drive is the computer’s long-term memory. All programs and files (Pictures, videos, documents, games)  are stored.

• It doesn’t matter how many times you turn your computer on or off, the programs and your data will always be there.

Graphics card

• A graphics card displays images and videos on your monitor.

• Modern graphics cards come with in built fans to keep then cool.

• Often modern graphics card are the most expensive part of a pc build.

• State the purpose of a graphics card.

• Extension: What is the name and price of the most expensive graphics card in the world.?

The Quadro-GV100, selling for over $8,000, is considered the most expensive GPU ever manufactured.

Post end of lesson quiz/afl if time permits. 

Sort the pc parts from the input and output devices.
