Look at the yellow verbs

Hi Billy. Is Lola there? She isn't answering her phone.

Present Continuous

The yellow verbs are called the present continuous.

Discuss the following questions in pairs:

- When do we use the present continuous?

- How do we make the present continuous?

Present Continuous

Hi Billy. Is Lola there? She isn't answering her phone.

- Hi Ewan. Lola's in the bathroom. She is washing her hair.

We use the present continuous when we talk about things that are happening right now.

We are learning about the present continuous. <- this is happening right now!

Present Continuous

We create the present continuous by using the verb 'to be' and the main verb + ing

Be quiet! I am trying to study here and my little sister is sleeping!

Freddy is learning for his test.

My parents are travelling to their work at the moment.

Present Continuous

We create negative sentences in the present continuous by using the verb 'to be', not and the main verb + ing

I am not trying to study here and my little sister is not sleeping.

Freddy is not learning for his test , which is a bad idea.

My parents are not travelling to their work at the moment, they're at home.

You can also use the shortened forms (isn't, aren't)

Present Continuous

We create questions in the present continuous by using the verb 'to be', the subject and the main verb + ing

Is my little sister sleeping?

Is Freddy learning for his test?

Are your parents travelling to work?

Present Continuous

With most verbs we use main verb + ing

But what do we do with verbs that end in an -e?

Take -> taking

Smile -> smiling

And sometimes words get an extra consonant (medeklinker):

stop -> stopping

chat -> chatting

Michael ... to music on his phone.
