Direct speech vs Reported speech
Direct speech is when we tell someone 
the actual words that another person
used.
She said: "I like Peter."

Reported speech is when we tell 
someone what another person said.
She said she liked you.

Reporting verbs
We use reporting verbs like say, tell, ask, admit, promise, explain, announce, invite, want, etc.

He said he felt lonely in Afghanistan.
He told me he'd be home for Christmas.
He asked me to look after his dog in the meantime.
He promised he would seek mental help.
