What was the Battle of Lepanto?
Battle between Turkish fleet and Spanish fleet, they fought for power over Europe. The Spaniards won.

What do you know about the Ottoman empire?
- it was founded by Osman, close to the Byzantine border in 1299
- In 1453 they conquered Constantinople, ending the Byzantine (eastern Roman) empire
- The sultan saw himself as a successor of the Roman emperor
- He was also a caliph, a secular and religious leader of the Islam

What was the reconquista?
- It was the Christian reconquest of Spain. The Spaniards only allowed the Catholic faith in their empire. Other beliefs, such as Muslims or Jews, were persecuted by the inquisition. People fled or converted to Catholicism.

2.2 European expansion begins
- The Portugese prince Henry sent out ships to Cape Bojador each year, because he thought there was gold to be found there.

- However most captains were afraid of the Sea of Darkness.
- Captain Gil Eanes succeeded.

Voyages of discovery
After 1434 more voyages of discovery followed. The regions that were discovered were used to find and buy gold and slaves. The Europeans began to expand their power and influence, the European expansion.

Portugal and Spain were in dispute about who owned what side of the world. In the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) it was decided that there would be an imaginary line form north to south of the Athlantic Ocean. 
East of the line was Portugese, west belonged to Spain. 
Portugal focussed on Africa and Asia, and the Spaniards on America.
