• You may start with Lesson 1 and build the character for your own book.

Look for any typographical pointers that indicate change of voice or emotion:

• other fonts
• sizes
• colours 
• dots (...) 

After this we read the book aloud and we need to do the voices and emotions!

Children's Book: Build the character

Go this website (keep it open in a seperate tab!) and go to number 2. 

In literature there are FLAT and ROUNDED characters. 

• Flat means they are one-dimensional and don't add much to the story/adventure. Rounded means the opposite. 
• Try to think of a rounded character who has an adventure or a problem which they face. 
• When you are done please show this to your teacher for feedback.

• "Once upon a time"

• Make a sketch of your title page.
• Make it attractive to the reader and show what the story is about. 
• Try to use wordplay to attract the reader. 

Children's Book: Create problem

• Create a problem which the main character has to solve or an adventure which the main character will be on.  

• Your main character has certain characteristics which they need to solve this problem; e.g. a hippo can have an adventure in water, but it can't climb a tree... 

• If you are quickly done with this part then go ahead to lesson 4, since that will probably take some more time!

Children's Book: First draft

• Start writing the story. We want you to write a story of about 250-300 words.

• First you will make a handwritten version. You make this first draft in class. After you're done writing ask a neighbour to proofread your story in order to weed out any inconsistencies in the story. If you need a re-write then do so. 

• Also make some sketches on paper with a pencil of the pictures you will be using. Including the cover of the book.

• Besides the main rounded character also include some flat characters to help the story along. Think of a great catchy title.

• Use colored pens or pencils to make clear which words you want to emphasize and spoken differently. You may also make them BIGGER or use another way to make clear those words are emphasized.

You hand this in at the end of class. This is the first part of your grade (40%). Afterwards you will take your work home and make it into the final draft printed with hand-drawn pictures or pictures made on your computer (10%).
