Quite possibly the most quoted phrase in literature, 'to be or not to be' has made the eponymous protagonist of Hamlet an icon of Shakespearean drama. Hamlet's famous soliloquy has been read, performed, misunderstood, interpreted and reinterpreted countless times since its debut in the early seventeenth century.
