Explaining much/many/etc.

Als we 'veel', 'weinig', 'een paar' of 'een beetje' willen gebruiken in het Engels doen we dat met:

veel: much / many / a lot of / lots of 

weinig: little / few 

een paar: a few

een beetje: a little

Zoals je ziet zijn er vele vertalingen mogelijk voor veel en weinig, wat je wanneer gebruikt leer je op de volgende dia.

Vertalingen van 'veel'

Voorbeelden:

veel informatie - much information / a lot of information / lots of information

veel ijsjes - many ice creams / a lot of ice creams / lots of ice creams

veel broccoli - much broccoli / a lot of broccoli / lots of broccoli

veel wortels - many carrots / a lot of carrots / lots of carrots

Vertalingen van 'veel'

Je ziet dat je in alle gevallen a lot of and lots of kunt gebruiken, maar dat 'much' en 'many' niet overal gebruikt kunnen worden.

Het verschil:

much wordt gebruikt bij niet-telbare dingen/enkelvoudsvormen

many wordt gebruikt bij telbare dingen/meervoudsvormen

'information' is een enkelvoudsvorm

'carrots' is een meervoudsvorm: one carrot, two carrots, etc.

Vertalingen van 'weinig'

Voorbeelden:

weinig aardappelen - few potatoes

weinig geld - little money

Het verschil:

Hier geldt hetzelfde few is telbaar en het znw staat in het meervoud, en little is niet-telbaar en het znw staat in het enkelvoud.
