Introductie

In this Newsfocus lesson, we dive into a global pop culture phenomenon: the 30th anniversary of Pokémon. Pokémon is much more than just toys or video games; it's a multimedia empire worth hundreds of billions of euros that has connected multiple generations for three decades. From the very first games on the Game Boy in 1996 to today's international fan cards, EDM concerts, and physical events. This ready-made lesson is suitable for social studies or sociology. It covers topics such as globalisation, consumer behaviour, generational differences, and commercial mass culture.

Key Info

What?

Pokémon is celebrating its 30th anniversary all year with exhibitions, new video games, special cards, and collection events.

Why?

On 27 February 1996, the very first games, Pokémon Red & Green, were released in Japan. Thirty years later, it is one of the most valuable and profitable entertainment brands on earth.

Where?

Its birthday is celebrated worldwide with special editions and events like Day Out; an event for families to discover Pokémon in real life.

Background

  • From Nature Lover to Global Hit: Creator Satoshi Tajiri used to collect insects in the woods near Tokyo. He wanted city children to also experience the joy of discovering, collecting, and playing outdoors. This is how Pokémon was born.

  • Collecting and Hunting: People love searching, collecting, and completing sets. Every game is thrilling because you never know which monster you'll catch. This combination of collecting, hunting, and surprise is the strength of Pokémon.

  • Children and Adults: Adults who played with the Game Boy as children in the '90s are reliving their own youth and now sharing the fun with their own children. This keeps the brand appealing to all ages.

  • Social Game: Pokémon emphasises trading, cooperation, and playing together. So, you never play the game alone.

Gotta Catch 'Em All!

How to Play Pokémon?

The famous slogan of the game 'Gotta Catch 'Em All!' perfectly summarises the game. Here are some rules of play:

  • The main objective: As a player, you are a Pokémon Trainer. You travel the world to locate, capture, and train wild creatures (Pokémon).

  • Strategic battles: As a trainer, you create the strongest possible team of up to 6 Pokémon and engage in battles with other trainers.

  • Evolution and growth: By winning battles, your Pokémon become stronger and 'evolve' into larger, more powerful monsters.

  • Trading: An important part of the game is trading. Some Pokémon are rare. By trading and collaborating, you can complete your collection as a player.

The players

They gain access to new game elements and events. The anniversary also fosters new connections, bonding with other players and, above all,

fun!

What does this mean for...

The Pokémon Company and Nintendo?

They earn a lot of money from these festivities. The Pokémon brand is only getting stronger in the global game and toy industry.

Retailers

They are benefiting from the Pokémon craze. The sales of Pokémon products are increasing significantly. Shops do, however, need to take measures against 'scalpers', people who buy up rare products to resell them at high prices.

What could be a consequence?
