Slide 1 - Tekstslide
What do you Know about planets?
Raise your hand and I will write anything about the planets you know up on the board
Slide 2 - Tekstslide
Objective:
Students will learn about the position of the planets from the sun.
Students will be able to identify the planets in Earth's solar system
Slide 3 - Tekstslide
stop at 2:35
Slide 4 - Tekstslide
The Sun
The sun is the only star in our solar system
Nothing can survive without the sun
About one million Earth's could fit inside the sun
The sun is the center of our solar system
All planets orbit around it
Slide 5 - Tekstslide
Slide 6 - Video
Mercury
T
he closest planet to the sun
Mercury's surface has lots of craters and hills
Mercury orbits the sun in 88 days
It is inhabitable on Mercury (which means their can be no life) because of extreme temperatures
Slide 7 - Tekstslide
Venus
The second planet from the sun
The orbital period around the sun is 225 days
Lots of volcanic activity (1,600 volcanos)
The surface temperature could melt lead
There are sandstorms up to 450 mph
Slide 8 - Tekstslide
Earth
Our home!
Orbital period is 365 days ( 1 year)
The Earth was formed over 4.5 billion years ago
The only planet able to sustain human life
The Earth has one moon but no rings
Lets take a moment and talk to the person next to you about a place on earth you want to go some day and some place you have already visited!
Slide 9 - Tekstslide
Mars
Th
e fourth planet from the sun
Mars has a rusty red color, known as "The Red Planet"
Its orbital period is 687 days
Mars is one of the most explored places in our solar system
Very large dust storms
Slide 10 - Tekstslide
Jupiter
Fifth planet from the sun
The orbital period is 12 years!
The planet is made up of gases and liquids swirling around
Lots of storms, especially at what is called " The Great Red Spot"
The Great Red Spot is big enough to hold two Earth's
Slide 11 - Tekstslide
Saturn
The sixth planet from the sun
Saturn has 30 or more rings
Orbital period is 29 years
Saturn also has 62 moons
Just like Jupiter, Saturn doesn't have a true surface. Instead, Saturn is made up of mainly gas.
Slide 12 - Tekstslide
Uranus and Neptune
Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun
Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun
Both planets are considered to be "ice giants"
Uranus's orbital period is 84 years
Neptune's orbital period is 165 years
Both of the planets extreme cold temperatures to not allow any life to take place or thrive
