Indirect speech
direct speech:
Johnny says, 'I am working late tonight'. 
'I love all Marvel films,' she said.
indirect speech: 
Johnny says that he is working late tonight (it is the same day) 
Johnny said that he was working late last night. 
She said (that) she loves all Marvel films (she still loves them)

  • tense is often further back 
  • pronouns may change 
  • references to time and place may change

Simple present in direct speech: He said,  'I know where she is'

Pay attention
  • you can inverse the 'mother said' - part, but not when you're using a pronoun (not: said he, said I)
  • Shall and should are only used with I and we!
  • All kinds of references to objects, time, and place may change form
