Monarchy

• A king inherits the power from his predecessor (voorganger)
• Council of Elders (wise old men) helped the king govern
• A king = a monarch

Aristocracy

• A few rich noblemen hold the power
• Council of Elders help the noblemen
• 'Aristoi' = noblemen

From monarchy to aristocracy?

• Greek poleis fought a lot of wars
• The soldiers were rich noblemen who had their own weapons
• The soldiers protected the polis
• In return the soldiers (noblemen) were given a say in local government

Tyranny

• One man manages to take control of all the power 
• Mostly by using force
