What is Mod?>

Dota originally started as a mod (modification) for Warcraft III.

This means:

• It was a fan-made custom map, not an official game.

• It was developed and updated by community creators.

• It was based on an earlier custom map called Aeon of Strife.

• It existed only inside Warcraft III’s map editor.

The Birth of Dota 2

The story of Dota 2 started long before the actual game. In the late 1990s, there was a special map in StarCraft called Aeon of Strife. It was different because it focused on controlling one strong hero instead of large armies. This idea led to the creation of a new type of game called MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena).

The big change happened in 2003 with Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. This game had a tool called the World Editor, which let people make their own maps. One of these maps was Defense of the Ancients (DotA).

In DotA, two teams of five heroes compete to destroy the other team's base, called the "Ancient." Players can level up, buy items, and work together to win the game.

The Growth of Dota 2

DotA became more and more popular. The people who worked on the map started to make the game better and more serious. One of them was Steve “Guinsoo” Feak. He improved the game’s rules and added special item combinations. However, the most important person was Abdul “IceFrog” Ismail. He continued creating the game and made it much more successful.

With IceFrog as the leader, DotA was no longer just a hobby for fans. It started to become a balanced and competitive game with many players who loved it. Soon, a version called DotA Allstars became the most famous one. It was updated often, and new heroes and new game mechanics appeared regularly.

DotA Allstars became incredibly popular on Battle.net. The game was played by so many people that it even appeared in esports tournaments, although they were not official at first. Later, Guinsoo left the project and joined Riot Games to help create another game – League of Legends. IceFrog was also invited to join Riot, but he said no and continued working on DotA.

Valve Steps In – The Birth of Dota 2

By 2009, DotA already had millions of players. However, the game could not grow much more because it was still using the old Warcraft III system. The company Valve saw that DotA had a lot of potential, so they made a very important decision. They hired IceFrog and asked him to create a new, independent version of the game. This new game was called Dota 2. It was not just an update – it was a completely new game made from scratch.

Work on Dota 2 started in 2010. In 2011, Valve surprised the world by announcing a special Dota 2 tournament at Gamescom. This tournament was called The International. The prize money was shocking – 1.6 million dollars, and the winning team got 1 million dollars. At that time, this amount of money was something nobody had seen in esports before.

Dota 2 officially came out in July 2013. The game had a new game engine, better graphics, and it was free to play. Because of The International, many experienced DotA players moved to Dota 2, and many new players also joined. Where is Dota 2 Today?

Some other MOBA games, like League of Legends, try to be easy for everyone. Dota 2 is different. In Dota, every hero is free, and players can choose their own strategy. It is hard to master, but that is exactly why many players love it.

Even though the prize money for The International is smaller than before, Dota 2 esports is still very active. Big companies like BLAST, ESL, and PGL spend a lot of money to host tournaments every year.
