Ocean Creatures

Students will use technology to explore ocean creatures and learn how different animals live and survive in salt water.

Do you like the ocean?

What kind of water is the ocean made of?

A

Salt Water

B

Fresh Water

C

Both

Salt water was correct!

The ocean is made of salt water, which means it has tiny bits of salt mixed into it. This salt comes from rocks on land that slowly break down over time and get carried into the ocean by rivers and rain. Because of all that salt, ocean water tastes very salty and is different from the fresh water we drink. Many ocean animals are specially made to live in salty water, which is why they can’t live in lakes or ponds.

What is this animal?

A

Shark

B

Fish

C

Dolphin

D

Jellyfish

Shark was correct!

Sharks are amazing creatures, and there are many different kinds of sharks in the world. Scientists have discovered over 500 species of sharks, and each one looks and behaves a little differently. Some sharks are huge, like the whale shark, which is the biggest fish in the ocean. Others are tiny, like the dwarf lantern shark, which can fit in your hand. Even though they all look like sharks, they come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, and they live in different parts of the ocean.

What is this animal?

A

Starfish

B

Plankton

C

Whale

D

Sea Turtle

Sea turtle was correct!

Sea turtles are gentle ocean animals that spend most of their lives swimming in the sea. There are seven different kinds of sea turtles, and they can live for a very long time. Many sea turtles can live 50 years or more, and some even reach over 100 years old. They grow slowly and travel long distances across the ocean during their lifetime. Because they live so long, sea turtles need safe, clean oceans to help them survive.

What is this animal?

A

Coral

B

Jellyfish

C

Fish

D

Barnacle

Jellyfish was correct!

Jellyfish are soft, wiggly ocean animals that float through the water like little umbrellas. They don’t have bones, a brain, or even a heart — just long, gentle tentacles that help them move and catch food. Some jellyfish can glow in the dark, and they come in many beautiful colors. But even though they look pretty, we should never touch a jellyfish, because their tentacles can sting to protect themselves. Most stings aren’t dangerous, but they can still hurt, so it’s best to look at jellyfish with our eyes, not our hands.

What is this?

A

Seaweed

B

Plankton

C

Coral

D

Lionfish

Coral was correct!

Coral is a very special part of the ocean. Even though coral looks like a colorful rock or plant, it is actually alive. Coral is made up of tiny living creatures called polyps, and they all live together in big groups called coral reefs. These reefs give food and shelter to many ocean animals, almost like underwater neighborhoods. Coral grows very slowly and needs clean, warm water to stay healthy, which is why it’s important for us to protect the ocean.

What is this animal?

A

Dolphin

B

Whale

C

Sea Snake

D

Fish

Whale was correct!

Whales are the biggest animals in the ocean, and some are even the biggest animals on Earth. Even though they live in the water, whales are not fish — they are mammals, just like us. That means they breathe air, have warm bodies, and their babies drink milk from their mothers. Whales come in many different kinds, from huge blue whales to playful humpback whales. They use songs, clicks, and whistles to talk to each other as they swim through the ocean.

What is this animal?

A

Starfish

B

Sea Lion

C

Seaweed

D

Fish

Fish was correct!

Fish are animals that live in the water and use their gills to breathe. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, and they swim using their fins and tails. Some fish live in the deep, dark parts of the ocean, while others stay near the sunny surface. Fish lay eggs, and many of them travel in groups called schools to stay safe. There are thousands of different kinds of fish in the ocean, and each one helps keep the ocean healthy.

What was your favorite ocean creature?

The ocean is a big, beautiful place filled with many amazing living things. We learned that the ocean is made of salty water and that lots of different animals — like sharks, sea turtles, jellyfish, coral, whales, and fish — all live there together. Each creature has its own special way of surviving in the ocean. When we learn about ocean animals, we understand how important it is to take care of our oceans and keep them clean. The ocean is their home, and it’s our job to help protect it.
