The ocean is made of salt water, which means it has tiny bits of salt mixed into it. This salt comes from rocks on land that slowly break down over time and get carried into the ocean by rivers and rain. Because of all that salt, ocean water tastes very salty and is different from the fresh water we drink. Many ocean animals are specially made to live in salty water, which is why they can’t live in lakes or ponds.
