Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to explain the functions of the different parts of an animal cell.
What do you already know about animal cells?
Introduction to Animal Cells
Animal cells are the basic unit of life in animals, and they have various parts with specific functions.
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane acts as a barrier, controlling the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance within the cell that holds various organelles.
Nucleus
The nucleus contains genetic material and controls the cell's activities.
Mitochondria
Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell, producing energy through cellular respiration.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The endoplasmic reticulum is involved in the production and transportation of proteins and lipids.
Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi apparatus processes and packages proteins and lipids for transport.
Lysosomes
Lysosomes contain enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris.
Vacuoles
Vacuoles store water, nutrients, and waste products within the cell.
Cytoskeleton
The cytoskeleton provides structure and support to the cell, as well as facilitating cell movement.
Homework Assignment
Create a labeled diagram of an animal cell and write a paragraph describing the functions of each organelle.
Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.
Write down 2 things you want to know more about.
Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
