English in Primary School

- Engels in het basisonderwijs (Eibo) = vanaf groep 7

- Vervroegd Eibo = vanaf groep 5 of 6

- Vroeg vreemdetalenonderwijs (vvto) = groep 1 (15% in Engels)

- Tweetalig Primair Onderwijs (tpo) = groep 1 (30-50 % in English)

CLIL in Primary School?
Why?!

CLIL & English

Learning a subject through a second language provides young learners with:

- Exposure to spoken English

- A purpose and context to listen to English and try to speak and understand it

What does SLO say?

Kerndoelen: 13 - 14- 15- 16

Groep 1/2 & 3/4 -> communication (listening & speaking)

Groep 5/6 & 7/8 -> (reading & writing)

Music through English?

English through music?

English as a vehicle to learn a subject (hard CLIL): subject is more important

The subject as a vehicle to learn English (soft CLIL) = language is more important

Why English and music together?

singing: words & phrases, sounds, rhythm, stress

Teacher -> body language

In short...

• CLIL = teaching two subjects at same time: English & content
• Teaching English and music = good combination

What about your English skills?

SLO: B2 (Havo/VWO)

BUT....

- you don't need to be perfect!

- you are allowed to make mistakes

1. Pronunciation (uitspraak)

2. Vocabulary 

3. Pronouns (persoonlijke voornaamwoorden -> I, you, we,)

4. Verbs (werkwoorden)

5. Present Tense (t.t.) think, go, leave, are)

suggestions:

- translate (listening + vocabulary)

- gap text (listening)

- change pronouns or verbs (grammar)

- write new lyrics (writing)
