Victorian era (1837 - 1901)
The Victorian era was one of the most remarkable in British history; it saw The Industrial Revolution, the growth of major cities, the birth of the British Empire and huge advances in medicine, transport and education. It was also a time when harsh working conditions and desperate poverty blighted the lives of the majority of the people of the country.

Oscar Wilde
  • Born October 16, 1854 in Dublin to famous surgeon
  • Excellent student - studied classics and got scholarship to Oxford
  • Won the highest honours upon graduation
  • Married Constance Lloyd: wealthy daughter of Queen’s Counsel, had two sons, Cyril (1885) and Vyvyan (1886)
  • Known for exuberant personality, interior decorating skills, and social manner
  • Member of the Aesthetic movement
  • Acquired literary success in plays and poetry, some famous works include “The Importance of Being Earnest,” “Salome,” “Ballad of Reading Gaol”
  • Died in 1900 at age 46 due to poor health
