What is a debate?

• structured discussion in which 2 or more people argue for or against a specific topic/ issue

Format

• Opening statements
• Arguments
• Rebuttal (discussion about the arguments)
• Conclusion

Opening statement

A brief but comprehensive summary of the main point or argument you'll be making.

Listen carefully to the next speaker:

1. How does he start this debate?
2. What does he provide during the explanation of his argument?
3. What does he say about the opposition?

The questions

How did he start this debate?

• introducing the speakers - providing arguments for his main statement

What did he provide during the explanation of his argument?

• evidence: research/ study that has been done

What did he say about the opposition?

• predicting what they might say AND refute that

Argument

Assertion: state your argument clearly

Reasoning: explain why the argument is true

Evidence: provide evidence to support

Impact: explain why the argument matters

Rebuttal

• Listen: find weaknesses in the opponent's argument(s)

• Respond: refute their argument, providing evidence or pointing out logical flaws

• Build: use this to reinforce your case/ argument
