A summary is a short retelling of a story or text that includes only the              important information.

  • Summaries include the main idea and leave out minor details. 
  • Summaries are a lot shorter than the original story or text.

Let's figure it out together!
Remember the somebody in our story is the main character or in this story the somebodies...

In this story our Main Characters are the three Little Pigs!

Wanted- What did our Main Characters want?

What our characters want is what they are trying to do!
We can think of what the somebody in our story wanted to do.

In this story, our Main Characters want to build nice and safe houses!

But- What was the problem in the story?
The problem in a story is what keeps the main character from getting what they want.
When we look for the problem we can think "But what kept them from their goal!".

In this story, our Main Characters keep getting chased by the big bad wolf who blows their houses down!

So- What was the solution?

The solution is how the main character fixes the problem.
We can think "So what did they do next!".

In this story, our Main Characters run to the third little pig's house that built his house out of bricks, which was too strong for the big bad wolf to blow down!

Then- How did the story end?
The end of the story is what happens next.
When we are writing about the ending we can think "Then what happened."

In this story, our Main Characters lived happily ever after!
