§3.5 Along the axes

Before doing this § yourself,

let's watch a few fine points!

Explain the difference between 'axis' and 'axes'.

Solution:

One axis, but two axes.

No ZIGZAG ?!

on the horizontal axis 

we don't use a zigzag.

Zigzags are only used on the vertical axis!

Watch ...

The SCALES on the Horizontal axis 

and the vertical axis 

are not the same! 

Task  1:

When drawing a graph 

for this table, 

what SCALE is best, on the vertical axis,

so for the HEIGHT in metres?

  1 cm = ....... metres (fill in in next slide!)

1 cm = ......... metres

solution:

The best scale on the vertical axis is: 

1 cm = 500 metres !

As 3800 metres is the highest height in the table,

you then need  3800 : 500 = 7.6 cm (say 8 or even 9) on the vertical axis.

Also 1 cm = 400 metres is good! Then the vertical axis is 3800 : 400 = 9.5 cm  

Task 2:

In the next slide,

describe the main advantage (voordeel) of 

plotting TWO graphs 

in ONE coordinate system. 

Use only ONE WORD! It's a VERB (=werkwoord).
